The LDS gold plates are something that members and non-members have been fascinated with for years. So, creating a replica of this amazing book of scripture is a great way to visualize the miraculous nature of this ancient artifact. It was easier than I thought. Check it out!

So, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I work with the youth in our congregation. As part of my calling, I was assigned to give a lesson about how the Book of Mormon came about, including the history of the LDS Gold Plates. It was my first time giving a lesson about this priceless historical record. I thought it would be fun to show them what they might have looked like. They loved it!

History of the Gold Plates

The gold plates are literally plates made of gold that the ancient American prophet Mormon abridged as a record of his people. Joseph Smith, son of Lucy Mack Smith and Joseph Smith Sr., translated the writings on the golden plates into what became the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. It is an ancient record that the angel Moroni allowed Joseph to uncover in a secret place on a prominent hill in Manchester, New York called the Hill Cumorah in 1827.

This new revelation is the keystone of our religion and crucial to our church history as members of the Church of Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith’s history and the story of the gold plates is important to Latter-day Saints and demonstrates the power of God in our lives. Although originating in upstate New York, our church headquarters now remains in Salt Lake City however Latter Day Saints live all over the world.

Gather your LDS Gold Plates supplies

I was able to find everything I needed to make these gold plates at my local craft store. But you can also purchase everything you need on Amazon as well. Overall, everything cost me less than $30. Depending on what you already have at home, it might not cost you much at all.

• Wooden box 6″ wide and 8″ long
• Gold foil cardstock pages
• Washi tape (gold)
• Bendable aluminum craft wire (gold)
• Gold metallic craft paint or spray paint
• Four 2″x4″ strips of thin wood
• Wood glue
• Hole punch
• Drill

Step #1: Prep the base of the plates

The base of the plates is what will represent the sealed portion of the gold plates. Start by drilling three holes into the left-hand side of the wooden box and also the bottom of the left side. This will be where the metal rings will be placed at the end. Make sure you drill holes big enough to fit the metal wire. Then, paint your wooden box and the thin wooden strips gold so it looks like gold plates. Finally, cut and place in place the wood strips. There should be four wooden strips placed on the two wide sides of the base. I placed a bunch of heavy books on the strips to hold them in place until they dried.

Step #2: Cut the paper and attach the rings

Cut the gold foil cardstock so it is the same size as the wooden base which is 6×8 inches. These will be place on top of the base. The metal plates or loose pages, such as the plates of Nephi, were like thick paper and were either made of pure gold or a combination of various metals. The foil cardstock gives these pages the appearance of gold. Punch three holes in each piece of cardstock so it matches the holes on the base.

Then, cut three pieces of gold craft wire to about 12-15 inches each. Trim them as needed. Insert each wire through each page of cardstock and then through the wooden base. Bend the wire inside the box so they stay in place. I used wire that wasn’t gold, so I just added gold washi tape to my wire and it turned out pretty good.

Step #3: Add final touches and reformed Egyptian

Your LDS gold plates are almost done. As a final touch, I decided to add four strips of gold Washi tape to the wooden pieces on the sides to make it pop. It made it look even more gold, which I kind of liked. Then, last but not least, I glued one page of reformed Egyptian onto the first loose gold page. It is kind of cool to see what reformed Egyptian actually looked like. The fact that Joseph Smith Jr. actually translated these Egyptian characters is a testament to me that he was indeed a prophet of God.

Where are the gold plates now?

If you are interested in seeing the actual Gold Plates, unfortunately that is not possible. Joseph Smith was in possession of the plates for 18 months and then returned the sets of plates to the Angel Moroni after he was done translating the Book of Mormon. However, he was permitted to show the plates to three original witnesses and eventually eight witnesses to testify of them. The three witnesses of the plates were Oliver Cowdery, Martin Harris and David Whitmer.

According to Joseph Smith history, the translation of the Book of Mormon only took three months. The translation process couldn’t have been completed without the use of a seer stone which was included with the plates. Other items included with the gold plates was the sword of Laban. Joseph’s wife, Emma Hale and Oliver Cowdery are just two examples of people who assisted Joseph in the translation.

I hope you have as much as I did making these LDS gold plates. They are a great way to give an object lesson about the Book of Mormon. Since the weight of the plates was about 40-60 pounds, I also filled a duffle bag full of books that weighed about 40 pounds. Whether you’ve heard about them or you know of one, many people might wonder what Latter-day Saints believe. Well, as a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (yes, that’s our official name) I’m here to debunk 10 myths about our church. Take a look!

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I’ve been asked a lot of questions about what I believe through the years. Sometimes people are just curious and sometimes people have heard myths and rumors that aren’t completely accurate. So, as a member of the LDS faith, I’m going to do my best to de-bunk some of the most common myths about what Latter-day Saints believe.

Important note: I am not an official representative of the LDS Church. The information provided below is based solely on my experience and understanding as a life-long member. If you would like to learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, please visit comuntochrist.org.

#1: Do you believe in Jesus?

Yes! We are Christian. Our church is named after Jesus Christ. He is central to everything that we believe. Not only do we believe that He is the son of God, we also believe that he is the savior of the world. He is the light, the life and the hope of the world. I love Jesus.

#2: Does your husband have more than one wife?

We believe in marriage between one man and one woman. However, during certain periods in history–including in Biblical times— we believe God has commanded his followers to practice plural marriage. Between 1852 and 1890, Latter-day Saints openly practiced plural marriage. However, that practice is no longer followed by members of our faith. I only have one husband. Enough said.

#3: Why do people call you Mormon?

The term “Mormon” is a nickname that was publicly been given to members of our church because we believe in an additional book of scripture called “The Book of Mormon“. We actually prefer to be called “members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” or “Latter-day Saints”. We prefer not to use the term “Mormon”. Although Mormon was a faithful prophet, we do not worship him. We would rather focus on the fact that we believe in Jesus Christ, as our Savior and Redeemer.

#4: Do you wear magic underwear?

The temple garment (not magic underwear) is worn by adult Latter-day Saints who have made sacred promises in the temple. Garments are underclothing similar to an undershirt and knee-length briefs. The are a very sacred and daily reminder of our commitment to God to live good and honorable lives. Just like you wouldn’t make fun of a Muslim woman’s hijab or a Catholic nun’s habit, it is very offensive to joke about a Latter-day Saint’s temple garments.

#5: What is the difference between an LDS temple and a chapel?

LDS chapels are a place where members gather together regularly for Sunday worship services and weekly activities. LDS temples are sacred buildings where individuals can come and make promises with God. Only Latter-day Saint members who are prepared to make and keep these promises are allowed to enter. Temple are sacred places not secret places. In fact, when they are are first built, temples are open to the public for people to take a tour inside. There are currently 315 temples worldwide that are either completed, under construction or announced.

#6: Do you support the LGBTQ community?

There is a place for everyone in our church. We believe kindness, inclusion and respect for all of God’s children. Jesus Christ has a perfect understanding of our of our difficulties. If you want to learn more about our beliefs about same-sex attraction and transgender issues click here.

#7: Why don’t you drink coffee or tea?

We believe in a law of health that is called The Word of Wisdom. This law commands us to not put substances in our bodies that can be harmful and addictive such as tobacco, drugs, alcohol, coffee and tea. It’s all about having control of our own bodies and only consuming things that will keep us healthy and strong.

#8: Do you believe in the Bible?

Yes! We believe the Bible is the word of God and testifies of Christ’s ministry on the Earth. We also believe in another book of scripture called The Book of Mormon. It is another testament of Jesus Christ concerning the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. We believe that the Bible and the Book of Mormon work together to bring people closer to Jesus Christ.

#9: Do you believe in multiple heavens?

Latter-day Saints believe that after we die, each of God’s children will inherit one of three heavens (which we call degrees of glory). This will depend on the extent to which we accept and follow Jesus Christ. We also believe that a person’s reward in the afterlife will be determined by what they really desire in this life. In other words, God wants all of His children to be happy.

#10: Do you baptize dead people in your temple?

No. We do baptisms on behalf of those individuals who did not have the chance to get baptized while on Earth. This is called Baptisms for the Dead. We believe that when a person dies, their spirit leaves their body and continues to exist in a place called the Spirit World. There they can learn more about Jesus Christ and accept or reject the baptism that was performed for them in holy temples after they died.

Finding the good

Although Latter-day Saints believe differently in some aspects, there are still so many similarities among other religions of the world. We believe in God and we believe in loving everyone. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we hold weekly activities with the youth in our congregation ages 12-18 years old. We like to focus on four different areas: spiritual, social, physical and intellectual. That’s the awesomeness of this activity. It’s a fun way to incorporate all four areas. It’s kind of like a scripture scavenger hunt without the treasure map. And we have everything you need to get started in one printable. Check it out!

Everything you need to host your own treasure hunt is included in this comprehensive guide printable below. Just click on the link at the end of this blog post and you’re on your way.

This digital download printable includes detailed instructions on the first page and a list of the scriptures, clues and the location of each of the clues for each of the four teams. It also includes a page of clues for each four teams.

Cut and hide the clues

There are five different clue cards for four different teams. All of the clues lead the teams to a different area but everyone should end up in the Relief Society Room at the end. Print the clue sheets for each team and them cut each clue into strips.

Next, use the instruction sheet to figure out where to hide each of the clues. For example, the first clue for Team Blue is Psalms 6:6. This scripture says:

“I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.”

So … Clue #1 for the Blue Team should lead them to the couch in the lobby of the church. That is where they will find the second scripture, Clue #2, which is Leviticus 26:31. The answer to that clue is a garbage can. So they need to look for Clue #3 on, in or under a garbage can somewhere in the church. You get the idea. All of the scriptures are in the Bible or the Book of Mormon.

Divide your youth into groups and get started

Don’t forget to tell your youth to bring their scriptures. They can also use the scriptures on their phones if they forget. Divide your youth equally into four small groups. You can do less groups if your youth group is smaller.

Give each group Clue #1 and tell them to look up the scripture and figure out where the next clue is hidden. Make sure they know that the scripture clues are all inside the church somewhere. You can give all of the leaders the instruction sheet so if the youth can figure out where a certain clue is, they can help them.

Make sure the kids remember that they need to be reverent in the church and don’t run or yell. I also call other leaders in our area to make sure there weren’t any meetings or other functions happening that night because we basically used the entire church.

Also, remind the youth that if they find a clue for a different team, to just leave it there.

Finish the treasure hunt in the Relief Society room

Everyone’s final clue should lead them to the Relief Society room in the church. You don’t want to give away the final location of the treasure hunt, so try not to set up anything in this room that would tip them off. As they start arriving in the room, you can have quiet music playing and some chairs set up to sit down on.

You can basically make whatever prize you want for the end of the treasure hunt and thank them for their hard work. The first team to finish wins! They sell these really cute treasure boxes on Amazon and you can put a treat or prize inside of there for everyone.

You could also print some tiny strips of paper that say, “Treasure the scriptures” and glue them around some Hershey’s Nuggets. And you could also give them a bookmark for their scriptures.

If this LDS scripture treasure hunt doesn’t take very long, you can take some time at the end for everyone to share their favorite scripture story. Our youth group of latter-day saints really had a lot of fun with this activity. We had our class presidency hide the clues and they got really creative. One of the girls said, “I didn’t think this was going to be very much fun but it ended up being better than I thought.” Well, I’ll take it!

I love Jesus. I love who he is and who he represents. But sometimes it can seems overwhelming and kind of scary to share your beliefs with those around you. That’s why I’ve come up with 50 easy ways to share your beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a non-threatening and loving way. Check it out.

I grew up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My belief in this church influences everything that I do and it makes me so happy. I want others to experience that happiness as well. But it’s hard to talk about religion with other people. Even though I served a mission in Paris, France, it doesn’t make it any easier. Then I realized that I was making it harder than it needed to be. That’s why I put together this list of ideas of how you can be a member missionary today. Check it out.

Sharing the Gospel in conversation

• “This weekend, this cool thing happened at my church …”
• Tell the next telemarketer that you’ll listen to their message if they listen to yours
• Take an online language learning class on italki or Baselang and share your beliefs with your teacher
• Record the following message as your voicemail, “Hi! You’ve reached ____________. Sorry I missed your call. If you want to learn more about Jesus, let me know. Otherwise, you can visit churchofjesuschrist.org. Have a great day!”
• When your non-member friend asks you what’s new, tell them about the newest temple that was announced or the latest talk that President Nelson gave
• Ask other people about their own beliefs and be genuine
• Be bold and unashamed when talking about your beliefs

Day-to-day missionary work

• Put an “I love Jesus” sign in your front yard
• Attach an “I love Jesus” bumper sticker on your car
• Place a basket of free Books of Mormon on your front porch for the delivery people
• Leave a Book of Mormon and a thank you note in the mailbox for the mailperson
• Display images of Christ throughout your entire home
• Give pass along cards and Books of Mormon away at your next yard sale
• Invite your non-member friends to the next baptism, baby blessing or missionary farewell in your ward
• Leave a Book of Mormon in a Little Free Library
• Place an uplifting quote or note on the windshield of a car that you park next to
• Give a homeless person a pass along card and a warm meal
• Invite a non-member to speak or teach a skill in your ward
• Attach an “I love Jesus” keychain to your car keys
• Join an interfaith choir during the holidays
• Welcome everyone in your social circle regardless of religious affiliation

Member missionary work on vacation

• Leave a Book of Mormon in the hotel room or Airbnb where you stayed
• Carry a pass along card with you wherever you go
• If you’re from Utah, when people ask you where you are from, say, “I’m from Utah,” and then give them a pass along card and say, “This is what Utah is about.”
• Openly read a physical copy of the Book of Mormon on an airplane
• Give your Uber driver a pass along card, every time
• Leave a pass along card next to your tip at a restaurant
• Ask people for directions to the closest chapel for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
• Leave a pass along card or Book of Mormon on the airplane after you leave

Missionary work by example

Living the way Christ would live is sometimes the best way to be a member missionary and share your beliefs with others. The following ideas don’t need to be followed up by an invitation, just the way you live should inspire others to want to be better.

• Invite a neighbor over to dinner at your house
• Don’t swear
• Wear modest clothing
• Participate in a service project from Just Serve
• Get involved in the community
• Volunteer to coach your child’s sports team
• Weed your neighbor’s flower beds
• Pay for the meal of the person behind you in the drive through
• Join a book group
• Smile
• Volunteer in your child’s class at school
• Celebrate other religious holidays such as Ramadan, Hanukkah and Lent
• Start a playgroup that welcomes ALL of the kids in your neighborhood

Social media missionary work

• Follow other religious social media groups and actively comment on their posts
• Post images of baptisms, service projects, etc.
• Create a YouTube channel, Instagram or Facebook profile or podcast that focuses on Christ
• Share what you are grateful for such as temples, families, Jesus
• Advertise and invite others to watch General Conference
• Share your conversion story online
• Follow the profiles of the missionaries serving in your ward and comment on their posts
• Only post things online that would reflect a representative of Christ

What is the Book of Mormon?

For those of you who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Book of Mormon is a book of scripture that takes place in the ancient Americas and is a compilation of spiritual and historical records written by prophets. It is not a replacement or substitute for the Holy Bible but a companion to it and testifies of Jesus Christ and his life and mission.

Latter-day Saints believe that the Book of Mormon is a sacred book. That’s why many members, such as myself, hang visual representations of this book of scripture as a reminder of our beliefs.

It always grabs the audience’s attention and illustrates a gospel lesson in an easy-to-understand way using everyday objects. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I teach Sunday school to my local congregation once every month. It was very intimidating at first, but one thing that helped grab everyone’s attention was an object lesson. Instead of listing scripture references and lecturing, object lessons were a great way to engage my students. I would get a lot of positive feedback at the end of the lesson. So, here’s a list that will hopefully help you as well.

I thought of this object lesson when I gave the Relief Society lesson on the priesthood. Show a hollowed out egg to the audience (click here to learn how to hollow out an egg). Ask them what it is and why. They will say that it is an egg because it looks like an egg. Then, crush the egg in your hands. Now ask them what it is. They will say it is a shell, not an egg.

Explain that just like the egg, our church is just a shell without the priesthood. The priesthood is what makes the difference between a shell and an egg.

Tithing

Keeping the Sabbath Day holy

This is one of my favorite object lessons because it teaches with everyday object what are good things that we can do on a Sunday using an actual “sundae”.

Faith

Hardened heart

This was another idea I used for my Gospel Doctrine less on how to avoid hardening your heart. Follow this recipe on how to harden milk using vinegar. Shape the finished product into a heart and allow it to dry.

Present the hardened heart and ask the audience what it is made of. Then tell them it it made of milk and one other ingredient. Have them guess what the second ingredient is. Then tell them it is vinegar. Ask them what ingredient are they adding to their lives that has the potential of hardening their hearts.

Building a strong foundation in Christ

Word of Wisdom

This is a simple attention grabber for an object lesson on the Word of Wisdom. Bring a remote controlled car to your lesson. Drive the car around a little bit to demonstrate how the car works. You can let some of the participants drive the car as well. Then tell the class that the remote control car represents our bodies. If we allow substances in our bodies that are addictive, it’s like we’re being controlled by a remote. However, if we choose to eat healthy foods, get plenty of sleep and avoid addictive substances, we will be in the driver’s seat.

Good choices/Agency

Using salt, an egg and a glass of water, you can teach your students about righteous choices and how it can invite the presence of God in their lives.

Making good friends that stick

Peer pressure and making good friends are real issues our teenagers face, so is one of the best LDS object lesson ideas all you need is a balloon and some pepper to help demonstrate this idea.

Slow to anger

Gold Plates

To teach about the Book of Mormon, I made this replica of the gold plates so that the young women in our ward could see what they might have looked like. Then, I also filled a duffle bag full of books that weighed 40 pounds so everyone could feel how heavy the plates actually were and appreciate all that Joseph Smith did.

Wise Man and Foolish Man

Although this is one of the familiar Bible object lessons, it’s a great way to illustrate preparation towards eternal life and the Celestial Kingdom. Grab pitcher of water and pour it over a small popsicle stick house placed on sand and then the same for a house place on a rock. This is perfect for kids as well.

Dollar Bill

This is a great lesson that illustrates how sincere someone’s heart is and that you can’t fool God. All you need is a real dollar bill and a Monopoly game dollar bill.

Studying my scriptures is on my to do list everyday. Whether or not I get that done is another story. So, after feeling a lack of inspiration in my life, I decided to create these daily scripture cards and what a difference it has made.

Being a mother is amazing, but also all-consuming. When I finally have a moment to myself at night, I have a huge list of to dos waiting for me. Studying my scriptures is constantly put on the back burner. That’s why I created these scripture cards for every single day of the year.

Quick and easy scripture time

When I wake up in the morning, I simply grab my scripture card for the day and carry it with me wherever I go. It fits nicely into my phone case. Then, when I am waiting for carpool, eating lunch or taking a five minute break on the couch, I can read through my scripture and memorize it one line at a time.

Although some days I’m not able to memorize the whole thing, it allows my mind to refocus on something spiritual without having to pull out my scriptures and journal. Just simply repeating the scripture in my head gives me deeper understanding to the words.

Just print and cut out

So, here’s the FREE PRINTABLE – Daily scripture cards. Just send this PDF file to your local printer.  I had each of my pages laminated so they were more durable from daily wear and tear. Then I cut each card out with a paper cutter and punched a hole in each one. You can buy a binder ring to connect them all together.

I like to separate my according to month in baggies and then I can easily find my card for the day.

Scriptures, quotes and more

So, when I chose the particular scriptures on these cards, I included the following:

1. Quotes from LDS General Authorities
2. Every scripture mastery (labeled as “SM”)
3. The Living Christ and Proclamation the World: The Family (divided into paragraphs)

If you accept the challenge and memorize every daily card, you will have gained a stronger testimony of the scriptures and the words of living prophets.
