Campfire banana boats are like ice cream sundaes and s’mores had a baby and they are sooooo good! If you want to switch up your camping desserts to something fun for the whole family, then you have to try these. They will be a hit and only require three ingredients. I first learned how to make banana boats during girl scout camp when I was 12 years old. From the moment I tried it, I was hooked. Now, as a mother of five, I love to make these for my kids whenever we go camping. They are a little bit healthier than s’more but just as yummy. Check it out!

Gather your campfire banana boats ingredients

As I said above, this yummy recipe only calls for three simple ingredients. You might even have them at home already. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Ripe bananas or brown bananas
• Chocolate chips (mini or regular)
• Mini marshmallows

In addition to the ingredients, you’ll also need some tin foil and a knife. Even a plastic knife will do in a pinch. But the aluminum foil is pretty essential. No need for graham crackers with this recipe.

Step #1: Assemble your boats

To make your campfire banana boats, take one whole banana and don’t peel it! Instead, using a knife, cut through the peel of the banana from the stem down to the bottom. Don’t cut all the way through the banana. Your banana peel is going to become the “bowl” or “boat” that you eat directly out of.

Then, open up your banana and add chocolate chips and marshmallows and wrap in tin foil. Make sure it’s wrapped nice and tight so nothing can get in our out.

Step #2: Cook in the campfire

Now your banana boat is ready to cook. You’ll want to place it on some hot coals and not directly on an open flame. Otherwise, your banana boat dessert will just burn. Let it cook on one side for about 10-15 minutes (or 5-7 minutes on each side), rotating regularly. Depending on how hot your campfire is, it might take longer than you might think. You can it to cook over the equivalent of medium heat. You can also pull it out of the fire and check on it periodically to see if it is done. When you see brown spots on the peel, it’s getting close.

Step #3: Eat and enjoy!

After the gooey marshmallows and chocolate have melted, you can peel open the tin foil and start eating! You may need some tongs or oven mitts to pull them out of the open fire so you don’t burn yourself. The best part is these campfire banana boats taste just like an ice cream sundae or a classic banana split to me. Of course, campfire desserts always take better when you are camping.

You can also spice up your banana boat by adding some other delicious toppings instead of chocolate chips such as regular peanut butter cups, graham cracker pieces, mini candy bars, Golden Grahams, butterscotch chips, caramel sauce and coconut flakes.
