There are tons of ways to make bird feeders for kids, but these two are super easy and don’t require very much work or supplies. We were able to make both of ours in 20 minutes! Here’s how you can do it too.

So, I stumbled upon a big bad of bird seed at the grocery store for only $1.50! I couldn’t pass up such a good deal. Since my son, Pete, is always up for a good DIY project, he joined me in the fun. We discovered how to make two super easy bird feeders in just a matter of minutes. Here’s what we did.

Citrus peel bird feeder

The first bird feeder that we made was a citrus peel bird feeder. It is super easy. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Orange, lemon or grapefruit
• Four 10-inch lengths of yarn or string
• Knife
• Bird seed

How to make it: Take your orange and cut it in half. Scoop out the insides of the orange until you are just left with the peel. With one half of the peel, cut four tiny evenly-spaced holes about halfway down the peel (you don’t want the weight of the bird to pull the yarn through the peel). Then thread each piece of yarn through each hole one at a time. Then tie a knot at the end of each yarn so they won’t pull through. Tie all of the pieces of yarn together and then fill the peel with bird seed.

Popsicle stick bird feeder

One of the other great bird feeders for kids is the popsicle stick bird feeder. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

• Jumbo popsicle sticks (the colored ones are the best and don’t use regular-sized popsicle sticks)
• Four 10-inch lengths of yarn
• Bird seed
• Hot glue gun

How to make it: First, make the base of your bird feeder by laying down six popsicle sticks right next to each other and then hot glue them together with two additional sticks lying in the opposite direction on both ends. Then, tie the four pieces of yarn onto the ends of two popsicle sticks and glue those to the base. Finally, glue popsicles sticks “log cabin style” until you form what looks like a little basket. Pull the strings together and tie them at the top. Fill your feeder with bird seed and hang it in a tree.

My son was super excited to go outside to hang his bird feeders for kids. They were the perfect addition to our yard. Now, we’re excited to see what kinds of birds make their way over. Make sure you hot glue the popsicle sticks really well, because our base fell through and all the seeds fell to the ground.
