I was at the grocery store. All I had left on my list was frozen peas. However, my five-year-old was no where to be found. My three-year-old was running up and down the aisle opening all of the freezer doors. And my baby’s “hangry” scream was echoing throughout the frozen food aisle.

After wrangling my kids and rushing through the checkout line, I made a B line to my mini van. “Just keep it together,” was all I could think. Then something bad happened …

As I loaded my baby into his car seat, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned to see a man standing by my car. My son was next to him, sitting unbuckled inside the shopping cart. Confused, the man started to explain.

Apparently, while I was completely distracted with my baby, my shopping cart had rolled away, picked up speed and nearly crashed into a nearby parked car. The man saw the predicament and ran halfway across the parking lot and stopped my cart before my son became a projectile into the air.

I was so flustered and embarrassed by the entire situation, that I hardly muttered a “thank you”. I just finished buckling my kids and drove off.

Although, this happened years ago, I think back to that day every time I go to the grocery store. I am forever grateful for the stranger who saw a mother in need and didn’t hesitate.

Trust me. I don’t want to be at the grocery store anymore than my kids do.  But sometimes I have to go. I can’t leave my kids at home.  I would do online shopping more often if I was organized enough to plan ahead. I would also do it at night when my husband is home, but sometimes we are just too busy.

So, I just want to say thanks:

• Thanks to the five strangers who came to my rescue when my entire cart tipped over with three kids inside.
• Thanks to the store manager who was nice when my son dropped a jar of pickles on the ground.
• Thanks to the cashier who gives my kids Smarties and a stickers.
• Thanks to the other mom who totally gets it when my kids are screaming in the store.
• Thanks to the grocery store workers for leaving free fruit and samples for my kids.
• Thanks to EVERYONE for being so understanding.
