Giving little boys a haircut isn’t as hard as it seems. Just ask me. I have four boys (and a husband, ha ha.) I had no prior experience, just motivation to save hundreds of dollars every year. So, I bought my first set of clippers and stepped into the unknown.

The best part about cutting boys’ hair is that they don’t really care that much how it looks. So, you can practice on them all you want. If you botch it, just shave it all off. It’s not until they turn seven or eight that they really start to notice. So let’s get started.

Step one: Base of the head

Using a good set of clippers, attach the #1 attachment, start at the base of the side burns and shave about an inch above the ears. Shave around the entire head forming a straight line from the base to an inch above the ears.

Now you want to blend the short hair on the base of the head with the long hair on the top. Start with a #3 attachment below the line you just created and roll up the side of the head about 1 1/2 inches. Then, do the same thing with a #2 attachment about 1 inch above the line.

Step two: Blend

By now, you should have a slight line around the entire head. You can remove this easily by using a 1 1/2 attachment. Carefully run the clipper across the line around the head until you can’t see it anymore.

Step four: Trim the top

All you have left now is to trim the top. You can use any attachment four through eight depending on how long you want it. I used a #8 and it turned out perfect.

Haircut tips and tricks

Although it may take a few tries to get the process down, you’ll be a pro in no time. Here’s some other tips I found along the way that might help:

• Good clippers: Use high-quality clippers. Otherwise, it will show in the quality of your haircuts.
• Final trim: Run over the base with a #1 attachment one more time before you finish to make sure you get any loose hairs you might have missed.
• Turn on a show: For those wiggly ones, turning on a movie while you give a haircut make it a ton easier.
• Bribes are good: My two-year-old hates haircuts, so having gummy bears or chocolate as incentive to hold still works wonders.
• Haircut cape: These are a must because my boys start to itch right away and then the want to get out of there ASAP.
• Ears: Try trimming around the ears with scissors so those hairs don’t get missed

I hope this haircut tutorial was helpful. Now I just have to figure out how to give myself a haircut! Ha ha.
