I’m always motivated to help my kids with their reading at the beginning of the summer. However, we all lose focus as the days fly by. Here’s a few tips to help your kids (and you) stay on track.

Print this FREE summer reading chart

I designed this free summer reading chart to help my kids stay accountable for their reading every day. They can write their name on it and hang it on the wall where they can see it every day.

Give reading rewards

Figure out something that your kids really want, then use that as incentive. But make them work for it. If my kids read for 20 minutes every day, five days a week for the whole summer, they get to go to a local amusement park called Lagoon near our home. They are totally motivated.

Participate in local library programs

Most local libraries encourage kids to read all summer long with fun programs. Ours is super simple and the kids get prizes along the way. Ask your librarian to show you books that are appropriate for your child’s reading level. Go to the library every week. Your kids will start to count on it.

Read with your child everyday

This is a tough one but if you really want to help you kids, make sure you read with them everyday. Sometimes it can be challenging but if you do it the same time everyday, it will become easier and easier.

Make a book basket

Keep all of your books in the same place in the house so your kids know where to go right away. We use a simple basket but I love these sling book racks and these reading nooks.

Invest in some great books

There are some amazing reads out their for kids. It’s worth the money to invest a little bit in a lifetime of learning. Here’s some of my favorites from Amazon’s best seller list:
