I figured it was time to spice it up a little bit and refinish it. With a little sandpaper, paint and love, my ho-hum rocking chair became a work of art. It was easy. Here&#8217;s how to do it:</p>
<figure id="attachment_964" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-964" style="width: 656px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img decoding="async" class="wp-image-964" src="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Before-after-rocking-chair-1-300x221.jpg" alt="rocking chair" width="656" height="483" srcset="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Before-after-rocking-chair-1-300x221.jpg 300w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Before-after-rocking-chair-1-768x566.jpg 768w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Before-after-rocking-chair-1-1024x755.jpg 1024w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Before-after-rocking-chair-1-250x184.jpg 250w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Before-after-rocking-chair-1-1200x885.jpg 1200w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Before-after-rocking-chair-1-600x443.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-964" class="wp-caption-text">Before and after pictures of my refinished rocking chair.</figcaption></figure>
<p><span id="more-954"></span></p>
<p>Before you get started, just get the idea in your head that this isn&#8217;t a project that you&#8217;ll finish all in one day. Just take your time to make it look right.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-966" src="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rocking-chair_Pinterest-181x300.jpg" alt="" width="737" height="1222" srcset="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rocking-chair_Pinterest-181x300.jpg 181w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rocking-chair_Pinterest-768x1274.jpg 768w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rocking-chair_Pinterest-617x1024.jpg 617w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rocking-chair_Pinterest-250x415.jpg 250w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rocking-chair_Pinterest-1200x1991.jpg 1200w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rocking-chair_Pinterest-600x996.jpg 600w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Rocking-chair_Pinterest.jpg 1808w" sizes="(max-width: 737px) 100vw, 737px" /></p>
<h1>Step #1: Sand your rocking chair</h1>
<p>You&#8217;ll be tempted to skip this step. Don&#8217;t. It will allow for a smoother surface for your paint to adhere to. I use <a href="https://amzn.to/2WSmHrW" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">220 grit sand paper</a>. It&#8217;s very fine sand paper. If you have access to an electric sander, I would highly recommend using it just because it&#8217;s A LOT faster. However, you&#8217;ll still have to sand the little nooks and crannies by hand. Wipe your rocking chair down with a damp towel to make sure all the dust is gone.</p>
<figure id="attachment_956" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-956" style="width: 715px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-956" src="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_155550211-300x268.jpg" alt="rocking chair" width="715" height="639" srcset="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_155550211-300x268.jpg 300w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_155550211-768x685.jpg 768w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_155550211-1024x914.jpg 1024w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_155550211-250x223.jpg 250w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_155550211-1200x1071.jpg 1200w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_155550211-600x535.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-956" class="wp-caption-text">Sanding my rocking chair with 220 grit sand paper.</figcaption></figure>
<h1>Step #2: Paint &#8230; then sand again</h1>
<p>Buy a can of <a href="https://amzn.to/2FVlJnV" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">paint and primer in one</a>. It will save you steps and look fabulous. I chose Frosty Glade for my color since I thought it would look nice in my baby&#8217;s room, but you could pick any color you want.  It&#8217;s your project!</p>
<figure id="attachment_957" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-957" style="width: 694px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-957" src="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180502_133405651-225x300.jpg" alt="Rocking chair" width="694" height="925" srcset="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180502_133405651-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180502_133405651-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180502_133405651-250x333.jpg 250w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180502_133405651-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180502_133405651-600x800.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 694px) 100vw, 694px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-957" class="wp-caption-text">The paint that I used to paint my rocking chair.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Make sure you paint the rocking chair with a <a href="https://amzn.to/2G7d6rI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">small foam roller</a> on as many surfaces as possible. It will come out looking smoother without many brush strokes. Use a <a href="https://amzn.to/2WPjE3x" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">small paint brush</a> to paint the areas that you can&#8217;t get to with the roller. Then let it dry completely. After that, LIGHTLY sand the rocking chair to get out any bumps or bubbles.</p>
<figure id="attachment_958" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-958" style="width: 631px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-958" src="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_204957853_LL-225x300.jpg" alt="Rocking chair" width="631" height="841" srcset="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_204957853_LL-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_204957853_LL-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_204957853_LL-250x333.jpg 250w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_204957853_LL-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_204957853_LL-600x800.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-958" class="wp-caption-text">Putting on the first layer of paint on my rocking chair.</figcaption></figure>
<h1>Step #3: Paint &#8230; then sand again</h1>
<p>You&#8217;ve got to put on second coat. No questions asked. Follow the same process as in Step #2. Sorry for the dark pictures, I had to paint at night when my kids were in bed. Ha ha.</p>
<figure id="attachment_959" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-959" style="width: 648px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-959" src="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_213034298_LL-225x300.jpg" alt="Rocking chair" width="648" height="864" srcset="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_213034298_LL-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_213034298_LL-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_213034298_LL-250x333.jpg 250w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_213034298_LL-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180426_213034298_LL-600x800.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-959" class="wp-caption-text">My rocking chair after the first coat of paint.</figcaption></figure>
<h1>Step #4: Polyurethane &#8230; then sand</h1>
<p>If you stop after step #3, the paint will start chipping off your rocking chair almost immediately. All that work will have been for nothing. Polyurethane will provide a glossy, smooth finish and prevent chipping. I used <a href="https://amzn.to/2WSHnzI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MinWax Clear Satin Polyurethane</a>. I bought a less-expensive brand once on a dresser that I was refinishing and it left a yellow hue to the entire dresser. It looked awful. It&#8217;s worth it to pay for a higher-quality brand. It will look better.</p>
<figure id="attachment_960" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-960" style="width: 673px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-960" src="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180427_204236419-225x300.jpg" alt="rocking chair" width="673" height="897" srcset="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180427_204236419-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180427_204236419-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180427_204236419-250x333.jpg 250w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180427_204236419-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180427_204236419-600x800.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-960" class="wp-caption-text">The polyurethane that I used to refinish my rocking chair.</figcaption></figure>
<p>Try to use a foam roller or a foam brush for the polyurethane. Keep in mind that you can&#8217;t really wash the polyurethane out of the brushes, you&#8217;ll basically be throwing those away after you&#8217;re done. You can wrap your brushes in a plastic grocery bag however for a few days so you can use them for the second coat as well. Make sure you LIGHTLY sand after the polyurethane has dried.</p>
<h1>Step #5: Polyurethane &#8230; then sand</h1>
<p>This is the last step! Yay!  Follow the process in Step #4 and you&#8217;re done!!</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-961" src="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180501_210208266_LL-225x300.jpg" alt="" width="723" height="964" srcset="https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180501_210208266_LL-225x300.jpg 225w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180501_210208266_LL-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180501_210208266_LL-250x333.jpg 250w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180501_210208266_LL-1200x1600.jpg 1200w, https://mysillysquirts.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/IMG_20180501_210208266_LL-600x800.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 723px) 100vw, 723px" /></p>
