The easiest DIY birthday money box in three steps
Admit it, money is always a fun gift to receive on your birthday. And this do-it-yourself birthday money box makes it even more fun. Plus, you can make it on the cheap in three simple steps. Keep reading to learn more!
Gather your birthday money box supplies
There are a lot of different birthday boxes that you can buy online, but they are kind of pricey. Instead, you can make one at home for basically free. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Small empty cube box of tissues ($1.50 at Walmart)
- Wrapping paper
- Scissors
- Tape
- Printable birthday pull tab
- Utility knife
Step #1: Print and cut your birthday pull tab
The most important part of your birthday box is the birthday pull tab that is connected to the money. I designed my own pull tab that is universal and will work basically for anyone’s birthday. You can print this by clicking on the link at the end of this blog post.
Cut along the lines of the lower part of the pull tab and then leave a little white space as you cut around the “Happy Birthday” and the cake. The plain white rectangle will be taped to the top of the tissue box. You just need to cut one straight line with the utility knife inside the inner rectangle.
Step #2: Tape the money
Whether you’re using ones, fives or ten dollar bills, you’ll want them all taped together on the ends so they form a long stream of money. I ended up getting 15 one-dollar bills out of the bank for this present for my son’s 12-year-old friend.
Tape one of the bill to the end of the Happy Birthday pull tab. Then continue taping the remaining bills on the end of the preceding bill. It should make a long stream of bills connected together.
Before you start rolling the bills together to put in the box, you need to insert bills through slit on the paper rectangle. Then thread that paper up until it reaches the top to the Happy Birthday sign.
Step #3: Insert money and wrap the gift
Lastly, take the long strip of money that is taped together and roll it up from the bottom. Then insert that wad of money into the empty tissue box. Then, tape the paper rectangle to the top of the tissue box. This makes the birthday tab stand up straighter and the money pulls through a lot smoother.
After you’ve inserted the money and taped the paper rectangle, just wrap the present with your favorite birthday wrapping paper. You’ll have to wrap around the birthday tab, since it will be sticking out of the tissue box.
If you want, you could also add some other fun gifts inside of the box with the money such as gum, candy or toys. But, usually, cold hard cash is enough for a birthday present. I hope your money box turns out. Let me know what you thought of this blog post in the comments below.
