How to organize your kids’ shoes for good!
“Where in the H-E-Double Hockey Stick are my kids’ shoes?” I used to ask myself that question every single time we would head out the door. So, I would start searching and find LOTS and LOTS of shoes, but none of them ever matched! Ugh!
Luckily, I found the perfect solution to keeping my kids’ shoes organized once and for all. It’s super easy and super awesome and actually works.
#1 Find the right organizer for your kids’ shoes
First of all, you have to have a specific spot for your kids to put their shoes. A big bucket in their room just won’t do. They have to have their own drawer, bucket or space. Otherwise you’ll be digging through that blasted bucket every day. Check out this website for 11 space-saving ways to organize your shoes.
As for me, I bought this shoe cabinet from IKEA. It doesn’t take up a lot of space and it’s really cute. I put it in my entryway. Plus, there is a shoe drawer for each of my kids. You can try out this cute shoe cabinet as well.
#2 Lay down the “shoe laws”
We assigned each of our kids to a specific drawer. Then, we told them that as soon as they stepped into the house, they had to put their shoes in their shoe drawer. If we found them on the floor, in the backyard or anywhere except their shoe drawer, they would have to do a chore. Pretty simple.
#3 Provide incentive
My kids are almost always motivated by candy. So, I put a jar of candy on top of the shoe cabinet. Then I told my kids that they can have one piece of candy every time they put them away. This isn’t something I will have to do forever, but it gets them in the habit.
#4 Be consistent
Just like potty training a toddler, you’ll have to remind your kids to put their shoes away EVERY time you come home. After a while, you won’t even have to say anything. They will just do it automatically. They best part of all is that I don’t have to go searching for them anymore! It’s amazing.
