Super easy castle birthday cake for the non-baker
Before you spend bundles of money on a custom cake for child, check out this super easy way to make a castle birthday cake. Trust me, if I can do it, you can do it. Plus, it’s a fraction of the price. So, check it out!
As I was saying, I’m not a baker. Cakes are definitely not my specialty. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to pull of this adorable castle birthday cake. My daughter loved it and it only cost me like 15 bucks. Here’s how you can make one as well.
Gather your castle birthday cake ingredients
There’s not much you’ll need to buy to make this delicious and magical cake for your child’s birthday. Everything all together cost me about $15. Pretty inexpensive, right? Here’s what you’ll need:
- Five sugar cones
- Vanilla or strawberry wafers
- Cherry sours
- White decorating gel
- Pink sprinkles
- Two containers of strawberry frosting
- Two box mixes of strawberry or chocolate cake mix
- Twisted marshmallow poles (optional)
Step #1: Cook your cakes
The thing I like about this cake recipe is that you don’t need any special pans to make it. All you need is a 9×12 cake pan to make a square cake. If you want to make a round cake, just cook them in a round cake pan. So, make both cakes according to the directions on the box. I cooked both of mine in the oven in the non-stick pans at the same time. Make sure you put a piece of parchment paper down in each pan so the cake can be pulled out easily after they are cool. Once the cakes are cooked completely, pull them gently out of the pan, wrap them up and freeze them for at least two hours (overnight if possible).
Step #2: Assemble your castle cake
Once the cooked birthday cakes have hardened enough in the freeze, now it’s time to assemble. The cakes are way easier to work with and frost when they are frozen. Cut both cakes in half and stack three of the four halves on top of each other on a cake stand. Trim the sides with a knife until all of the sides are even.
Cut the remaining half of the second cake in half and then stack those two smaller cake pieces on top of each other on the top of the cake. Simple, right?
Step #3: Frost and decorate your cake
Believe it or not, there’s just on last step. This is the fun part. You need to frost and decorate your castle birthday cake. I just used a regular butter knife and frosted all around the cake. It doesn’t have to be perfect. And this is where freezing your cake beforehand will be very helpful.
Then, you’ll want to frost each of the sugar ice cream cones with the strawberry frosting and then roll them in a sprinkles. Place a frosted sugar cone on the corners of the cake and then one on the very top.
Place the three windows and two doors on the front of the cake and outline them with the decorating gel. Finally, add cherry sours along the edges of the top and bottom sections. You can also added some colorful twisted marshmallow poles along the base of the cake for added color and deliciousness. If you get really ambitious, you could make a draw bridge too.
Voila! You’re done. Wasn’t that super easy? And it didn’t take a lot of time either. Even though my castle birthday cake wasn’t perfect, it was perfect for my two-year-old little girl. She loved it. In fact, she loved it so much that she tore the left overs all apart the next time after her party. Oh well, at least I got a picture.
