Easy DIY Halloween monster decorations (non-scary version)
Not everything about Halloween has to be spooky and scary. That’s why these DIY Halloween monster decorations are perfect. They are easy to make and perfect props for your front yard this October. Here’s how to make it right now.

Every year, I love making my own scarecrow for a local scarecrow festival at Thanksgiving Point Ashton Gardens. So, this year, I wanted to do something fun and friendly to make everyone smile. That’s how I came up with a monster cupcake stand. It was surprisingly easy and versatile. Check it out!
Gather your DIY Halloween monster supplies
In this tutorial, I am going to show you with some easy steps how to make a monster cupcake stand, however, you can come up with whatever creation you want. Monsters can come in all shapes and sizes, so once you have the basics down, the sky is the limit.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Lemonade stand (I found mine at a yard sale for $20 but you can even make your own if you want)
- Cardboard
- Styrofoam squares
- Foam sheets
- Hot dog roasters (to hold up the pick monster)
- Hot glue gun and lots of hot glue sticks
- Duct tape
- Styrofoam balls (for the eyes)
- Pipe cleaners
- Pool noodles (for the arms)
- Wire
- Pain
- Gorilla glue
- Jumbo pool noodle (for the body)
- Ribbon
- 4-foot rebar (to hold up the blue monster)
- Acrylic paints
- DIY cupcake supplies

How to make the pink monster
Since this monster is essentially hiding behind the cupcake stand, I only needed to make a monster from the head up. This made my job waaaay easier. First things first, is you’ll want to make or buy a generic lemonade stand that your pink monster will be standing behind. Try not to get one too tall. Think kid-sized.
Measure the opening of the lemonade stand and cut rectangle with rounded edges at the top out of cardboard. Trace that shape to make another cardboard piece of the same size. I also added a piece of styrofoam that was the same shape in between the two pieces of cardboard to make it thicker. Then, just duct tape everything together. Cut a styrofoam ball in half and each piece will be the eyes. Draw where you want the mouth.

Then, using foam sheets, cut out the individual feathers, fur or texture shapes that you want to cover your monster. I cut out a bunch of pointy shield-looking shapes of the same size. Then, starting at the bottom, staple or hot glue each shape to the monster head until it is completely covered. Don’t forget the sides. I didn’t do the back since no one was going to see that part anyway.

Next, you’ll want to add the eyes, hair and mouth. You can paint the eyes with acrylic paint and staple some pipe cleaners to the top for the hair. Basically, just do whatever you want. It’s your creation.

How to make the cupcakes
So, if you’re doing a monster cupcake stand, you have to make some realistic-looking creepy cupcakes. Here’s a detailed tutorial of how I made these adorable fake cupcakes. Once your cupcakes are made, glue them to the cupcake stand with gorilla glue.

Duct tape two hot dog roasters to the back of the monster head and push them into the grass behind the cupcake stand. Then, cutout foam letters that read, “Cupcakes 50¢” and hot glue them to the front of the lemonade stand.

How to make the blue monster
When making a cute DIY Halloween monster, you basically just need to find an object shaped like a monster and then cover it with foam and add some eyes. I literally searched my garage until I found a jumbo pool noodle and figured that would do the trick.
First, poke some wire through the jumbo pool noodle for the arms. Then, add two small pool noodles on each side. I pushed the wire through the poodle noodles so it would be more secure and then duct taped the arms to the body.
Then, I did a lot of shaping with styrofoam to form the jawline/mouth, feet and horns. There is no right or wrong way to do this. I added all of these features first with wire and then secured with duct tape.

Then, last but not least, hot glue your blue foam shapes to the monster. I use scissors and made jagged teeth-like strips and hot glued them to the entire body and arms. This is the part that took the longest. But this is also what makes your monster look so unique. I added a different color of foam to the horns to make them stand out.
Then, I used gorilla glue to add on big eye and painted the eye green. For the teeth, I made them spikey and added some braces to make them look like young children. And that’s it! Just keep in mind that you will be using a lot of duct tape and hot glue throughout this entire project.

The final product
Once all of the individual pieces were complete, the last and final part was to put it all together. I tied the blue monster to a 4-foot rebar and placed the pink monster and the cupcake stand right next to him. Finally, I hot glued a cute cupcake in the blue monster’s hand.

This turned out so freaking cute, I couldn’t even stand it. I would love to see your DIY Halloween monster creations as well. Leave a picture in the comments below.
